Becca & Leland

Are those cherries? Nope, they’re crabapples! Becca and I had discussed incorporating some fruits in the tablescapes, so I asked Baltimore grower Hillen Homestead if she had any fruiting branches. I was thrilled when these beautiful rosy crabapples showed up in my order! Because this wedding was flirting with the first-frost date in Maryland and Virginia (“Frostmas”, which represents the end of the growing season for my local suppliers), I hedged my bets and spread my flower orders around a bit. And when none of my growers were hit with frost, I received an abundance of flowers to make this an unusually abundant and lush chuppah.
This was a rare morning wedding; my team arrived at 6:30 am to make sure everything was ready for the 11 am ceremony. I’m not a morning person (it was still dark!), but as the sun rose on a flawless fall day, I couldn’t have been happier to be flowering on my home turf of Wollam Gardens. The light was just incredible, the carpet of leaves still showering from the trees was a perfect complement to the warm autumn palette. And once the ceremony was underway, I had the rest of the day to go for a hike in the Virginia piedmont and kick back at a local cidery to celebrate my last event of 2022.
