The dogwood! Spring can be tricky when you’re working with local flowers. Availability changes on a weekly basis as flowering trees come into bloom and then fade just as quickly. Anemones, ranunculus, and poppies flourish in the spring, but their bloom can be slowed down by cool nights and cloudy days. In short, a florist has to be flexible and make the most of what’s in bloom in any given week.
Dogwood is my favorite flowering tree, so I was thrilled to see it at its peak the week of Sam and Scott’s wedding. I grabbed a few branches from the one in front of my house before I left for Wollam Gardens. They made the perfect finishing touch for the ceremony arbor and the flower cloud suspended over the sweetheart table, echoing the white anemones I used in the bride’s bouquet.
And, though I can’t take credit for it, the snowball viburnum hedge at Wollam Gardens set the tone for these dreamy photos, making a stunning backdrop for the reception in the pavilion.
